Radium Girls

Did you know about radium being used by factory women in the 1920’s?

It was also touted as healthy to ingest and was used in pharmaceuticals and even added to water that only rich people could afford.  The glowing paint was used to illuminate watch dials to the numbers and hands could be read in the dark.

Some of the women, and the male scientist that originally developed this radium paint began to deteriorate and their bodies broke down in a way that was unprecedented.

These women were taught to use their mouths to straighten the bristles of their brushes as it saved the companies time and material.  As such, their teeth, mouths and jaws were often the first to decay.

The cases these women won against their employers was the first major legal win regarding workplace safety and set a precedent for employees rights.
