Multi-Passionate and Unapologetic
“Keep all your passions in your life.” ― Austin Kleon
I find myself in my creative life “going off in all directions” a bit and being interested in about 30 different things at one time. In the present, I am interested in the following: writing, sketching, sewing, embroidery, beading, painting, baking, cooking, gardening, parenting, reading, cleaning, doing interior design, rehabbing furniture, being an entrepreneur, social media management, website design, and on and on.
I have a craft room in my home where I have a large fabric stash I have collected over the years and a couple of sewing machines. I haven’t sewn much in the last year. But I still love sewing and I know that I can go at any moment into my craft room and get some sewing done.
I have purchased paints and sketch books and pens and pencils. I have used them sparingly. Every day I find new art supplies I want and I add them to my amazon cart. I call this digital window shopping. I don’t buy supplies much when I haven’t been engaged in practicing recently. I add it to my cart and if I still want it days later maybe I will buy it.
I have a book about learning how to draw. It details out an entire college class schedule of learning to draw while doing about 3 hours of practice a day. I don’t have 3 hours a day to sit and draw, but I would like to complete the class anyway.
I have new product/business ideas every day and I have a wall in my bedroom with little pieces of paper and blue painters tape that keeps all my recent ideas where I can see them.
I have a good friend who has a few hobbies that she always does. She travels, hikes, camps, cooks and does some yarn crafts. Recently she mentioned that she hadn’t done anything with her yarn for a few months and she was thinking about getting rid of all her stuff. I thought about my own sewing space with my shelves of fabric that have been sitting for months without being touched.
I get it, we all have too much stuff. Maybe she needs the space. However, just like the Austin Kleon quote above, I believe there is room for all of us to have things and hobbies we love regardless of what we are doing with them at the time.
I am all about decluttering things that don’t make you happy.
But I also know that I can love something without using it regularly. And that is ok too.
Do you find yourself being interested in many different ideas or practices each day? If so, leave me a comment and tell me what you are most curious about these days.
