What Am I Supposed To Post About?
I have discovered something about social media. Writing about what you hate does a few things:
- It gives that thing power by drawing attention to it. Attention is power and will always augment the thing that the attention is being drawn to.
- It riles up more people about that topic. People who are riled up don’t make the best decisions. They don’t get wildly creative and solve problems in innovative ways.
- It will find you a tribe of friends/followers who will resonate with the hatred and dislike. In the future they are more likely to act toward you in anger or hatred if you say something that disagrees with their general viewpoint on some topic.
Talking about what you love, admire, and find wonderful is the other side of this coin.
You can talk about how amazing you think your team/politician is without trash talking the other side. This is virtuous. You team isn’t good because “the other side is so bad”. Your team is (or at least should be) good on their own merits. Let’s talk about and focus on those things.
People who see your interest and who are open to your viewpoint on the topic will be in a much more creative frame of mind. People in a creative frame of mind are more often relaxed and not looking to fight or defend. You can use this to build a group of friends who are strongly interested in your interests. What could be better than that?
I don’t want to read posts about what you hate. I want to read posts about what/who you love and what projects you are working on. I want to know about your family and your art and the books and music you love.
Fine, you can have a shitty day and share it. I enjoy those posts as well sometimes.
